After going through pregnancy or losing a large amount of weight, excess skin will often be left around the abdomen. A tummy tuck with Truman Medical Center Plastic Surgery can help flatten your belly and bring out the toned midsection hiding underneath all the extra skin.
Deciding to Undergo a Tummy Tuck
There are many types of people who may consider a tummy tuck in Kansas City – from the mother looking to regain her pre-baby body to the man or woman who devoted years of hard work and exercise to lose hundreds of pounds of fat and now only has the excess skin left standing in the way of his or her ideal body. Excess skin is an issue that cannot be solved with diet and exercise alone, which is why a tummy tuck is often necessary to provide a person with real, significant results.
A common misconception about the tummy tuck is that it is a procedure for those dealing with excess fat. However, the tummy tuck in Kansas City is a skin removal and muscle tightening procedure that also works to restore the abdominal wall to construct a tighter, stronger core. Although removing fat is not the goal of a tummy tuck, patients who also have a small amount of fat in the abdomen and hips will benefit from combining their procedure with liposuction.
Dr. Aylward knows how rewarding a tummy tuck can be for a person and makes it her goal to provide each of her patients with the body they deserve.
Your Tummy Tuck Surgery
To begin your tummy tuck, your Truman surgical team will make a horizontal incision from about hip bone to hip bone, a few inches below your belly button. While there will be a visible scar, it is often easily hidden beneath a pair of underwear or bikini bottoms. Regardless, most patients prefer the scar to the excess skin.
Once the incision is made, we will tighten the abdominal wall, which is commonly stretched out during pregnancy or as a result of weight gain. This tightening of the abdominal muscles helps to not only create a slimmer shape, but also a much stronger core. If you have any stubborn fat along the abdomen as well, Dr. Aylward can perform a small liposuction procedure to help contour the area. Before closing your incision, she carefully pulls the skin taut, removing any excess along the way.
Tummy Tuck Recovery
The tummy tuck is a rather invasive procedure and will require a few weeks of recovery. It is important to be prepared and stay positive not only for the surgery, but during recovery as well. We will happily answer any questions you may have along the way.
Surgical drains may be required to prevent any fluids from building up beneath the skin. You will also need to wear a special compression garment during the initial weeks of healing. You will be tired and sore for some time, but stay positive! It will all be worth it once you’re standing in front of the mirror with your new belly.
Most patients will need about 2-4 weeks before they are able to return to work. However, make sure to limit any physical activity for about a month to a month and a half. Your scar will continue to fade and flatten over time, but you should be able to keep it well hidden beneath your clothing.
When patients see their new bodies for the first time, they are often overwhelmed with happiness. For many, this new body represents years of hard work to lose weight, a newly restored self-confidence, and much more.
